Tips on Breaking
into Showbusiness
At the Georgetown
Hollywood Alliance Entertainment Conference on July 3, at UCLA, Rich Battista
(BS '86), Exec VP at Fox TV and co-founder of the venture iFuse.com, Steve
Pena, partner at Loeb & Loeb; and Regina Stewart (BA ’84), writer/producer
at Warner Bros, offered a list of top suggestions for breaking into the
business:

1.
Network--with anyone and everyone you know.
2. Get contacts from contacts: always ask for 5 more contacts from every
contact you meet.
3. Make "informational meetings"--more often accepted by interviewees.
4. Try to enter the Industry through your area of expertise--if you’re
a lawyer then hrough legal or business affairs department.
5. Have a compelling story--e.g., you are passionate about film, rather
than feel that the Industry could be lucrative for you.
6. Be informed about the Industry, even if new to it.
7. Be willing to start low for little money--be humble and willing to
invest so you can move up.
8. Avoid HR people at all costs, or at least try to get your resume
in front of direct department heads who are ultimate decision-makers.
9. Be patient and persistent, and you’ll find a way in—and look for
sudden opportunities in this land of "right place and right time."
10. Research the people you meet (in advance).
11. Be flexible about jobs offered, and take opportunities.
12. Always be prepared for your interview.
13. Always be positive, no matter how bad the job.
14. Always be passionate about what you do.
15. Read up on the fields that interest you and the people that populate
them.
16. Have a care for the fine, undefined line between being persistent
and being a pest.
